AIM
To teach the concepts of quality management including quality control, quality assurance, quality engineering and reliability.
1. Introduction to Total Quality Management, Definition of quality, quality control and quality assurance, Elements of quality, Elements of TQM, Analytical Tools for quality improvement; Fundamentals of statistics for quality control – measures of central tendency and dispersion; Application of probability distributions to quality control – Binomial, Poisson and Hypergeometric distributions – Normal and non-normal distributions, Tests of significance for quality control. 10
2. Control of process quality – principles of control; Process capability analysis – quality capability study – average range method for determining process capability; Control of variable quality characteristics – theory of control charts – control limits; Types of control charts – control charts for variables – X and R control charts – control charts of attributes – p chart np chart and c chart; Concept of Six Sigma quality. 9
3. Quality assurance and acceptance – acceptance sampling – operating characteristic curve – development of single sampling plan, concept of AQL, LTPD producers and consumers risk – average outgoing quality (AOQ) curve. Other acceptance sampling plans – sampling tables. 8
4. Quality engineering – planning for quality and reliability; Quality standards – specification of inspection methods, setting of standard quality levels, introduction to ISO 9001:2000 quality management systems; Design of quality experiments using statistics – analysis of variance. 9
5. Reliability and maintainability – definition of reliability, factors affecting reliability – MTTF – MTBF – evaluation of reliability, quality management – organizing for quality – economy of quality – techniques of ABC analysis – quality management education – zero defects concepts – quality circles concept – applying total quality management in enterprises. 9
