EE 1401 -- POWER SYSTEM OPERATION AND CONTROL

(Regulation 2004)
Time: Three hours                                                    Maximum marks: 100
Answer ALL questions
PART A (10 x 2 =20 marks)

1. Define spinning reserve.

2. What is meant by load frequency control?

3. State the advantages of state variable model.

4. Define area control error.

5. Draw a typical arrangement of a simple AVR.

6. What is a static VAR compensator?

7. List the constraints in unit commitment problem.

8. What is meant by incremental cost curve?

9. What do you understand by network topology?

10. What are the functions of SCADA?

PART B (5 x 16 = 80)

11 (i) Define the following :
(1) Hot reserve
(2) Cold reserve
(3) Diversity factor.(6)

(ii) A generating station has the following daily load cycle : (10)
Time (Hours)     0-6     6-10     10-12     12-16     16-20     20-24
  Load (MW)      20        25         30           25          35          20
Draw the load curve and calculate
(1) Maximum demand
(2) Units generated per day
(3) Average load
(4) Load factor.
(or)
(b) Explain the following : (16)
(i) Load forecasting

(ii) Economic dispatch control (EDC).

12. (a) Two synchronous generators operating in parallel. their capacities are 300 MW and 400 MW. The droop characteristics of their governor are 4% and 5% from no load to full load. Assuming that the generators are operating at 50 Hz no load, how would be a load of 600 MW shared between them. What will be the system frequency at this load? Assume free governor action. (16)
(or)
(b) Develop the state variable model of a two area system and state the advantages of the model. (16)

13 (a) Explain the injection of reactive power by switched capacitors to maintain acceptable voltage profile and to minimize transmission loss in a power system. (16)
(or)
(b) (i) Derive the relations between voltage, power and reactive power at a node for applications in power system control.(8)

(ii) Explain the operation of static VAR compensator and state its advantages over other methods of voltage control. (8)

14. (a) State the unit commitment problem. With the help of a flowchart explain forward dynamic programming solution method of unit commitment problem. (16)
(or)
(b) (i) Develop an iterative algorithm for solving the optimum dispatch equation of an 'n' bus power system taking into account the effects of system losses.(8)

(ii) A power plant consists of two 200 MW units, Whose input cost data given by,(8)
F1 = 0.004 P1² + 2.0 P1 + 80 Rs/hr
F1 = 0.006 P1² + 1.5 P1 + 100 Rs/hr

15. (a) Briefly discuss the various functions of energy control centre. (16)
